Dublin-born, Cathal Armstrong is known for his unconventional vision of the culinary world and an environmentalist. Armstrong was born in 1969 to an Irish family with an inherent passion for food. This passion was sustained not only by the cultivation of family gardens of fruits and vegetables, but also by a father's appreciation for the cuisines of other cultures.

A very interesting story is connected with the name Cathal. Since he was born a few weeks after the famous astronaut Neil Armstrong returned from the moon, they wanted to name him after the astronaut. But this did not happen at the behest of his father.

Cathal's father was in the tourism business and regularly took his son with him on vacations to nearby European countries. Cathal learned more and more new products, food habits of people from different countries, their way of life. Traveling to different countries, Cathal has not only developed his appreciation and passion for gastronomy, but also learned many foreign languages. Besides his native language, he speaks English, French, Spanish and some other languages.

As a young man, Armstrong attended an Irish-only boarding school called "Colaiste Eoin" in Stillorgan. In 1985 he was recruited to the Dublin teenage Irish hockey team. Cathal believes that he would never have become a chef if he hadn’t got his hand playing this fastest game in the world.

Even as a successful adult, Armstrong often recalls his childhood, how he worked with his father in their family garden, which strengthened his connection with the earth. At the age of seven, in France, Armstrong began an unusual exchange of cultural and culinary values. He spent every summer with the Boudains family. He visited truffle farms, local vineyards, ate peasant food, and took part in harvesting fruit and vegetable crops. All this could not but affect Cathal. It was this family's experience that instilled in Armstrong the importance of organic farming, a commitment to using local sources, a value for animals and respect for the land.

Self-improvement attempts

As they say - the first pancake is lumpy. And so it happened with a young, inexperienced, at that time, Cathal. At 19, he opened his first restaurant in his native Ireland. However, having existed afloat for a short ten months, the restaurant was closed, because the young guy's ambitions were much stronger than his attitude to work.

Armstrong then teamed up with partners to open a sophisticated dining restaurant in the Dublin area. After two years at The Baytree, Cathal decides to move to Washington State, where for the next 11 years he learns from professionals such as Greg Mitchell, owner of New Heights, and Jeffrey Buben, owner of Bistro Bis.

On another trip to the San Gabriel Mountains, Cathal met his real wife and business partner, Meshelle Armstrong. They have always wanted a cozy spot where they could indulge in shared dreams and desires. 13 years after he first arrived in the state, in April 2004 in Alexandria, Armstrong opens Restaurant Eve. This contemporary American restaurant, with French, Spanish and Irish influences, reflects Cathal Armstrong's playful culinary style and deep-rooted commitment to natural ingredients.

Since the summer of 2006, three Armstrong family restaurants are opening in Virginia. This is the inimitable Eamonn's A Dublin Chipper specializing in fish and chips; bar "The PX" striking with a variety of cocktails; and the newly revived restaurant the Majestic with a unique menu offering freshly prepared young corn and beans (succotash), as well as a variety of delicious pastries, cakes and much more.

Cathal, as always, is demanding on the quality of the supplied products and on the suppliers themselves. This inimitable, outstanding artisan and gastronomic expert has received numerous awards for his masterly work. Thus, The National Restaurant Association has awarded Cathal Armstrong the Neighborhood Community Award; the popular Edible Chesapeake Magazine awarded the Local Hero Award; and The Washingtonian Magazine the Green Giant Award. All of these awards are given to those who work to preserve and protect the environment.

Another significant event in the life of the famous chef was the recognition by the White House of Armstrong as one of the main champions of diversity. Cathal has been honored to prepare a dinner party for such greats as Senator Ted Kennedy, George W. Bush at the White House, and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Armstrong is known to serve on the board of Fresh Farm Markets, which operates eight farmers' markets in the Chesapeake Bay area. Cathal's commitment to the ideals of "environmentalism", to the health and preservation of all living things, led him to lecture abroad at the request of the US Department of Foreign Affairs. Cathal was invited by the Ambassador to the Irish Flower Festival to recreate the garden of First Lady Michelle Obama, and to demonstrate to schoolchildren and festival participants the benefits and enjoyment of self-grown plants.

An incredible love of gardening pushed Armstrong to create an organic garden with an irrigation system in the backyard of his restaurant. The seasonal harvest of fruits, vegetables and herbs, he uses to create his unique dishes that nourish not only the plate, but also the soul.

As the father of two children, Eve and Eamonn, he teaches them healthy eating. Dissatisfied with the quality of food in schools, Armstrong, along with the leadership of a public school in Alexandria, formed a partnership called Chefs as Parents to improve the school's food system.
